On another thread MichealMouse mentioned Nora Hall being on Roy Underhills show on TV. I thought I would add some to what was said as she is such an outstanding individual. Her father was a master carver in Holland and she learned from him. This was during World War II. The family under her father's guidance was also active in the underground helping Jews during the Nazi occupation of Holland, a very risky business. I don't know when she immigrated to the US but we sure got a good deal.

Last year the DAM (Denver Art Museum) had an exhibition of crafts and artisans works from the Louvre in Paris. Every week a different local artisan would give a demonstration and lecture related to the works in the travelling exhibition. Nora Hall demonstrated the art and craft of woodcarving with special appeal to me and with great expertise and first hand knowledge. There were also artisans demonstrating metal workiong, gilding, working in plaster and several I can not remember without resorting to the brochure I do not have at hand.

This exhibition did not have the drawing power of Matisse and Monet but certainly had a power unequalled in the arts and crafts world. I do not know if the exhibit is still touring the US but if so and near you do not miss it.
