Is Norton 3x sandpaper realy 3 times as good and lasts 3 times as long as other sandpaper.? How does it compare to Klingspore?
Rockler is the only place I have found to get Norton 3x. Any other sugestions?
 
i'm still testing the stuff because I just got it Christmas. I bought it at Home depot. It cuts very cleanly and fast. I like the backing thickness. On my initial tests I would say it's better than Klingspor but I didn't use it on any oily woods. I would also like to know where to buy it in 100 sheet packs or 1 or 2 inch rolls.
 
Good sandpaper

The 60# is fast cutting for bad end-grain tearout and lasts longer than the standard Al oxide types. I like to use half sheets and find the grit size is only printed on the left half, so have to write on the other side to keep track of the grit size. Never seen bulk sale packs, only 3 at a time.
 
Norton 3X - Good stuff

I use everything from 100 to 400. I avoid <100. Since it stays so sharp, it cuts deep grooves that I have problems sanding out later.

I've actually all but stopped powersanding as I can handsand with the sheets in 1/2 the time/heat (usually). I'm only using up my ALOX new waves discs becuase I really don't want to throw them away. I'd LOVE to find velcro backed seeded ceramic gel sandpaper (like norton) as it'd REALLY cut down on my sanding time.

Bottom line, after trying it, it is the only sandpaper I'll buy (3M also sells SG sand paper under the sandblaster name, I still think the norton is a little better)

I am so glad to hear that Home Depot carries it. My closest HD store is a 6.5 to 7 hour drive away but on the 20th of Jan./05 there is a brand new fully stocked HD store opening in Sandpoint Idaho just one hour from me. I have been watching the construction progress and it looks quite huge. Guess where I will be on the 20th :) My *gotta get* list is growing in anticipation. And yes Ray ... a face sheild is on that list :D

Costs of 3X

Bought some #100 yesterday - 3 sheets for 3.68 plus our local taxes @15%.

What are the saving for the bulk packs? the norton web site shows bulk packs but never seen them around here.

Yes I agree that #60 may be a little too pointy as it took a lot of effort to rid a recent piece of those deep cuts on a smooth surface with very little tear-out.
 
Norton 3X Contractor Packs

I have found the 20 sheet contractor packs at Home Depot in the coarser grits. Rockler has 60~400 grit packs listed on their web site.

Testimonial: 3X is all I use for hand sanding these days. It is worth the money to me, particularily in the contractor packs.
 
You can get packs of 100 at Granger. Price depends on having a account and which account.
I ordered from Rockler. I won't live long enough to use packs of 100.
