Not a failed bowl

One more cut, I think I can get one more cut.

Phew! And one more, I bet I can get just one more cut...

Nice! What now, make a lamp shade out of it?

The source, (now retired) lampshade maker Peter Bloch. how to make not a failed bowl.

Popple is what we call aspen up here, a "weed tree" with little commercial potential. It used to be made into excelsior before foam peanuts replaced it for packing material. It has the highest moisture content on the stump and the highest translucency of any species, and it cuts like butter.
