Middle of zucchini season, and though others may still cross the street when they see me with my brown bag, we're enjoying even more at home.

Our old reliable Nordic Ware steamer cracked, so I took a flyer on this type at the beginning of broccoli harvest. http://www.mastrad.us/art.php?id=576 It is an incredible item that exceeds its promises. Broccoli steamed slightly al dente in two and a half minutes, 1/4 thick zucchini in three, those marvelous new (Norland!) potatoes...goes on and on. Highly recommended, and it won't break if you drop it. Believe me, you'll think you might the first few times. Flops.

Anyway, if you're looking for a steamer, give this or the bigger (got one of them, too) a try. Zucchini with thinly sliced shallot seems about as good as it gets, though SWMBO suggested an ear trim and a try on corn, too.

I may make another handled platter soon. It's a pleasing look.
 
Red for both, and corn is fine. Back when I was in college I worked a summer at a foundry, where we wrapped our corn with wet newspapers and piled the hot shot used to hold the mold halves together on top. Steamed in the husk, dipped in the butter jar, and of course, plenty of salt to help with those foundry temps. Tough to find anything else nostalgic about working in such a place.
