A good while ago they came to my shop to record an episode for a new PBS series called Volunteer Woodworker. Just got word that the new episodes of Volunteer Woodworker will be on PBS starting Nov 1st. Here locally it comes on Saturday at 5:30. I don't know if mine is the first episode but was told that was the original plan. They have filmed a lot of really good woodworkers in the last year many are friends of mine. Should be well worth watching.

Hi John. "Volunteer Woodworker", what's the context to that title? What are they hoping to represent with it?

He simply wants to show top woodworkers around the state. We have world class woodworkers many of whom I photographed their work overvtge years. He did a series called Highland woodworker where he had people teach a skill. Highland woodworking then sold these videos. As you tube got bigger these quitvselling so he started interviewing artists and put these on the state PBS stations. Then he pitched the idea Volunteer Woodworker to the national PBS and they were interested. He came to.my shop and did the first video. I helped him find several others who were friends. Don't know who else he found but we have many in the state. I know he did Alf Sharp who is one of tge top period furniture makers. Jerry Spady is an unknown wood artist with absolutely incredible sculptures. George Wertzal (also known as the Subaru guy from the commercial he was in) he us a blind woodworker and does great work. I'm having memory problems this morning and can't think of a few others I know.

Great, thank you. I'll check to see if it will be broadcast here in MN.

Awesome, John. My recorder is set.

Well, I'll be darned. Saturday afternoon at 3pm here in St. Paul/Minneapolis, I turn on my local PBS to find John's episode of Volunteer Woodworker just starting. The local seems to have picked up the series. It was great to see and hear about your work, John!
