I have noticed that when a new thread comes along everyone seems to read it and many replies are received. But after a few days if a more or less new question comes up within the thread, it may not get answered because maybe no one is still interested in the thread. In these cases I would think the question would be better served by asking it in a new thread. Opinions?

You need to understand the screen displays.
1. When new content is posted to an existing thread, the header is displayed in bold type. Once you click on the thread again (to see the new content), the bold comes off.
2. If 100 different people have viewed the thread, that number will be listed on the right but will not change even if the thread is viewed a 1,000 times by those same 100 people. This is different from other forums which list each separate viewing regardless of who actually looks at the thread.
I think your question assumes that, in the example I gave, that there is no interest in the thread because the "viewers" number hasn't changed. If that is your impression, this may change your view.
If a new question comes up, it might well mean nobody interested in the thread has an answer [Gad-zooks! Woodworkers at a loss for words? Impossible!] If you ask such a question and don't get an answer, it would probably be best to bring it out on the main board.

I think another reason is that most people have seen the original question and replies. A new response usually means a new reply, and if you've already seen the the initial question and replies, why bother looking at yet another reply? Not that late replies aren't worthwhile and useful - sometimes they are very good...
But my answer to your question would be to post your new question in a new thread to give it higher visibility. This just seems to be human nature...
