You mentioned about trying to get to the bottom of the plate where the hollow form and the plate merge. In my own square work, I have had some good luck with some of the new scrapers that Kel McNaughton is making. On the web page it doesn't show pictures yet, but I think it is the box cutters. He sent me a set to try awhile back and they are pretty easy to manipulate and re grind to these needs. On this size work, it may be a challenge though. What you will have to do is put them on a box rest and hold them flat to help arrest axial torque. If you use a regular toolrest, you may have some issues.
