Replacement Delta Motor Speed Control

The Penn State replacement system is for a half horse power motor. The Delta 46-460 has a one horse power motor. If the motor speed control will handle a one horse motor; I will consider it.
 
If you can get a parts number for it, you should be able to get it through just about any tool shop or electrical supply place. Probably cheaper than going through Delta...

Are you sure it is the controller and not just a dirty switch? I have built up a file on this over the past several years. We replaced a controller on one of our guild lathes several years ago and I own one which is a second lathe so does not get used much. One of our club members was able to repair one. I think it was an SCR that failed. Version I controllers are not available any longer and I am not sure if the second version is or not. I think one of the DC controllers on Amazon or eBay and a double pole double thrown switch may be the only way to go. Would be interesting to see what Delta have to say, if they are even interested in helping out. Tis a bloody shame what happened to the 46-460.
 
I agree with Mike. I would eliminate all of the other possibilities first. If your lathe is the Type 2 then the controller is still available, but not for the Type 1. I don't know the difference. The cost if the replacement controller is rather steep. While you're checking things out, check to see if there is a fuse in the controller ... also take a look at the motor brushes.
 
The Type II controller can be substituted for a Type I. That is what we did with our guild lathe. I do not know if there is anything different in the electronics. The main red run switch lever is physically different on Type II. The local manufacturers rep for Delta stick handled getting us a controller at the time. Going to look at the files I have on my computer and if there is anything I think worthwhile will forward. I have a folder specifically for it.

It's great to have some actual human input. If we had to depend on the automated parts replacement system we would be in deep yogurt. The automated system says the type 1 controller is discontinued and no suitable replacement is available. Most likely, the only difference is that the type 2 controller is an improved design, but otherwise equivalent.
