Thank you for taking the time to review my application to join your forum. My name is Rob Wages, I’m 57 years old, recently retired and relocated to Washington State. For nearly 37 years I worked in the residential housing market building a wide variety of homes. I began turning in July of 2019 after my Mothers passing. Her illness and eventual passing took a toll on me, I found myself suffering from depression, and buried my head in the sand, not knowing which way was up for nearly three months.
Then it all changed, faster then you can imagine. It was a Saturday morning, I was helping a neighbor re side her home and there was a yard sale across the street at the home of a gentleman named
Virgil Asendorf. Virgil passed in 2006 @ 96 yrs. old.
Retired from BFGoodrich for 46 years. RETIRED AT AGE 50. My neighbor asked if I was gonna go, my response was no, she replied she wanted to go, but not alone. Off came the nail bags and we were gone !! After passing the tables of dishes and miscellaneous small items, I turned a corner and entered the garage. His son greeted me, and after a few minutes I was allowed inside. A rare glimpse of one man’s life working with wood. He built furniture, tables primarily, but he had many vintage tools, v belt driven 1/2 horsepower electric motors that ran mini lathes, both wood and metal, joiners, sanders, table saws etc. Hand planes, monkey wrenches, pipe wrenches, pulley’s, c clamps of all sizes and more that were older than he was. For me, a choir was singing, lights were flashing, I was home. Finally, snatched from the depths of depression, I purchased as much as I could. I spent nearly $900.00. Each piece I purchased had to have been used by him at one point or I left it behind for someone else. My life changed that day. Thankfully it did, cuz I’d be upset if I had died one day and never had the experience of seeing the beauty of what lies beneath the bark of many types of trees. Old dead trees, destined to be burnt or left to Mother Nature’s disposal. That is what makes me get up everyday and turn. It is the treasure beneath the bark that inspires me to create.
