Hello. My name is Ryan and I'm from Golden, CO. I've had a lathe for many years but started getting serious during COVID years. Currently have a Jet midi-lathe and hope to move up to a full size in the next few years. I like to play with small hollow forms from scrounged wood, mainly aspen and beetle kill pine. I have recently started branching out to boxes while also learning color and textures. AAW has been awesome to help shorten my learning curves so thank you for all you share!

Greetings, Ryan, Your pieces look great - and I especially like the photography on the first one (with the flowers.

That area, and further west, is beautiful! I’ve been to Golden often, particularly a few decades ago when working with Coors ceramics (I assume they are still in Golden.) Our team designed and implemented an automated system to handle and visually inspect certain ceramic parts (I did much of the software)

I have friends near Carbondale (on the Roaring Fork) so on trips to Golden (and Denver) I’d sometimes extend my stay and drive through the mountains to visit - more fun than flying into Aspen. (Sometimes I traveled just to visit!)

I’ve never once turned aspen…

Hi John! Thank you for the compliments!

The Coors Ceramics building just closed last year. They just finished tearing most of it down and will be turning it into retail/restaurants below with high end condos up top. Our favorite camping spot is Reudi Reservoir, just north of Carbondale above Basalt. Its a beautiful area. You clearly have great taste!

I started turning aspen because it was free. I was afraid to practice on "nice" wood :-) It's a little soft and can be punky, but it fun to turn.
