sand blasting media?

Hi there Everyone,
I have a quick question about what type of sand blasting media to use on wood? What media works best on removing wood? Do you use more than one grade of material to get a finer finish? Is there a way to clean out the wood particles from the sand media after it has been used for awhile?

I know about silica and all the problems it can cause and am not trying to get into a discussion about that.

The plan here is to use a Harbor Freight cabinet and do the sand blasting out side wearing a good air filter.

I have not picked up any of the equipment yet - but this purchase is brewing and has been for awhile.

I use the white 70 grit stuff from harbor freight. There is a courser grey substance but it tends to stain the wood. I also spent a day and caulked the sand blasting cabinet to keep the sand from leaking out. It leaked sand blasting material everywhere before.

As for cleaning the material...the stuff lasts quite awhile. I'd just replace it when necessary. It doesn't cost very much.

Hope you have a big compressor! Enjoy...
 
If you do some dark woods, Menards sells Black Beauty which is fine slag. Works fast and is cheap. It will slightly darken white wood, but it may also leave black specs in the course grain.
