Some times the backing attachment is junk. Other causes are sanding at high speeds, and using too much pressure. Both of these will generate heat, and heat can cause the glue to fail. Most of the time, I think, they use a rubber cement, or some times called contact cement.

Was sanding at slow rpm but maybe pushing too hard. Didn’t feel hot but likely you are right. Thanks! Btw, bought an Axminster Chuck after reading some old comments of yours. Wow—Ferrari of chucks. Love it.
