I have been thinking for a while about a challenge of the month theme. I wanted something that would let just about everyone here participate. So, I have chosen a platter, but with a twist. It must have a wide rim with any sort of embellishment. Whatever you want to do: pyrography, paint, carved, beads. Anything goes! The only thing that would not go is a plain wide rim! How wide, you might ask? That is part of the challenge. A platter has to have a pleasant-looking wide rim in relation to the overall size. Search and take a look at Tom Wirsing's platters. In my humble opinion, his platters are just perfect.
And now, before you run out to the shop, take a minute to read the very important legal rules of this challenge:
There have been some rules changes from the legal department, so be sure to read:
  • Only one entry per person and only one photo of your platter
  • Entries must be posted in this thread.
  • The deadline for posting entries is midnight Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on September 24, 2022.
  • As always, this is a turning contest, not a "moldy oldie" photo contest, so in fairness to everybody, make sure your work is something you‘ve made after September 1, 2022.
  • You may not post any photos of your entry in this month’s challenge in any other thread or in the gallery until the voting has ended and a winner has been declared.
  • Voting will take place from September 25, 2022, through midnight UTC on September 30, 2022.
  • Solicitation of votes will result in disqualification.
  • The winner might have to pass a lie detector test before collecting the prizes. Good luck, have fun, make shavings, and let the chips fall where they may!!
When voting begins, you are allowed one vote, and once you have voted, you won't be able to go back and change your vote. After you have voted, you can track the vote totals. The voting is secret (just like a real election), so nobody else can see who you voted for (not even the moderators/administrators). The voting will end at midnight UTC on September 30, 2022. In case of a tie vote, the forum moderators will gather in a virtual shavings-filled shop to determine the winner.

Where do we draw the line between a shallow bowl and a deep platter? Is it a platter or a shallow bowl? I believe there is no right or wrong answer, nor do we have a definite rule. We will let the ultra-secret voting take place. May the best man or woman with the most votes win. I decided to add this below the rules instead of editing them. Now go back to your lathe and make shavings! Aloha from paradise.

But if it’s deeper than it’s wide …

I get surprised by people’s creativity on every monthly challenge.
Good point Bill. If it is deeper than the width it would be a Pu'ahala Calabash, LOL Deeper than it's wide would make it in my opinion a bowl or definitely not a platter. When you see something, the first impression is usually right.

Seems I never have time for this but had a blank ready and had been experimenting with embellishments so here it is. Wood is pecan, Eagle burned and colored with pencil. Holes colored with metallic gourd ink.

The September challenge is now closed. There are a lot of wonderful entries in this month's challenge. The poll is being prepared and will be ready for voting to begin early tomorrow (Sunday) morning. After you have voted you will be able to track the totals. Voting is secret so you won't be able to see names.
