For the May monthly meeting of the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild, Seri Robinson gave a superb presentation on spalted wood. Having studied spalted wood for decades, Seri may be a walking encyclopedia on the subject but presents the information without jargon or pretense.

Seri is lively, very entertaining, explains clearly, welcomes questions , . . . Even woodturners and other woodworkers with only a mild curiosity about spalted wood zre likely to find the presentation as enjoyable as it is informative.

The overall topic, spalted wood, was covered from A to Z, effectively using a number of interspersed images. The last half hour was an easy to follow description of the recommended shape of the bowl gouge cutting edge, how to use it on "punky" wood that is prone to tear out, why it works on "punky" wood, and then demonstrated its effectiveness using great tool control.

There are quite a number of demontrators available for symposiums and wood turning groups, and Seri has to be one of the best.

Was the demonstration in person or virtual?

It was in person. Following her presentation on Saturday, she held classes titled “Don’t fear the skew” on Sunday and “Turning spalted wood” on Monday.

I agree with Don, she is an excellent presenter and instructor.

As her web site indicated that she does remote demos and indicated they can be booked faster than in person demos, I contacted her. For and IRD she's booked through Fall of 2026. sigh.....
