Two of my detail gauges have become quite short. So much so that I can't hold them in my Wolverine vari-grind jig if I set it back 2 inches. I can only come back 1 1/4 inches and have the round plastic disk seat on the flutes so the jig will stay put. When I clamp it on at two inches it will slide around right in the middle of my sharpening.

Other than learning to free hand grind I wonder what suggestions you may have?

In the past, I've ground a flat in the same plane of the flutes, just needs a small amount for the disc to get some purchase,

Hope this helps.

After it gets too short for your 2" protrusion, I'd say you'll have to remove it from the handle.

True, it's short enough to think about using another tool with a longer flute for the grind you want. You can always use the short flute tool without the vari-grind jig, and get a standard grind using your V-arm. You can use up any usefulness entirely with the V-arm.
