shop dust collection

Well, to me, the Big Gulp hoods do an okay job, but you still need a dust mask. I want some thing more similar to my sanding hood so that the bowl is 75% enclosed. Then you don't need a dust mask, at least if you have a good dust collector.

Working up through the fine grits sanding a 10" dia. x 2.5" apple bowl today (why, yes, it could hold a few apples, as well).

1. The whole time the meter was next to me today, it was at 1, every once in a while 2, and even a 3. Pretty darn good even if that meter is known to have up to a 60% margin of error, but that's what you get for $40 instead of thousands. Earlier, at the band saw prepping this blank and some other band saw project work, the meter was reading 8-10. The ol' Delta 14" band saw has a below average dust hook-up of only 1-1/4". But I run a Fein vac on the saw, and that vac has some grunt. Anyway...

Yes, I've rebuilt the collector hood behind my Vicmarc. It is the same general size as previously, but now the right end wall of the enclosure is fixed in place, the entire hood is anchored to the wood shelf behind the lathe, and I moved the dust inlet to the left (like I do with my Oneway 1224) to keep the inlet out of the line of fire of shavings. I don't want shavings being caught, only airborne dust. This new hood design works great pulling the air right past the spinning wood and removing the dust.

As mentioned back in post #18 of this thread, even the "dust on my eyeglasses" test showed no more dust (granted- visible dust) than at any other time when not being in the shop. The collector ran through the entire turning operation, except for the oil finishing stages.
