I am rather new to vacuum chucking and I have only one vacuum chuck drum that I am using and it is 5 1/2 inches in size. I would like to have a small vacuum chuck that I could use with small lidded boxes. What do I need to do to create/build one of these? Is a small vacuum chuck a good idea for small applications like a lidded box? Any help would be great. VWNW
 
You can build a vacuum chuck just about any size you want but remember the smaller the size the less strength it has. I have one that is 3 1/2" for doing my small mirrors but you can pop the wood off with fairly light hand pressure even at 23/24 inches of mercury. I use bevel rubbing cuts and actually push on the bevel (instead of gliding on the bevel) to keep the wood in place. I would be leary of doing this on the lip of a bowl but since the mirrors sit pretty flat there isn't any real sideways torque unless you force the cut.
