Where do you think those 14" real wood salad bowls you can buy at your local Kroger store, with wood fork and spoon included, for $28.95 come from? Been to a Pier 1, Crate & Barrel, Home Goods, or IKEA lately?

Or how about those $350 hand-tied 5'x7' oriental rugs that took some child 6 months to make?

If anyone here truly believes that what they do in the sanctuary of their shop is so very unique and valued out in the real world, I think you may need a reality check. There are companies that turn out hundreds of such bowls each day. The retail prices you see result after 4-6 middle-man profits, plus shipping, stocking, slotting fees, import duties, etm. Wouldn't be surprised if that wood bowl in the link had an "ex-factory" price in Bangladesh under US$30.

What we do in our shops may "wow" our friends and family, give us a great deal of personal satisfaction, and draw complements from other turners, but to the great mass of humanity, a wood bowl is, well, a wood bowl [insert yawn followed by incredulity when you disclose the price you want].

PS: Of course, since the pictured bowl is cast resin rather than actual wood, the "ex-factory" price would be somewhere south of US$3.00 :D

Not to mention exotic woods.

There are also more than few turners in the US selling bowls they made way underpriced either because they don't value their work or don't need the income.
They should give them away through empty bowls rather than devalue the market and their reputation.

Also even fair trade items are way under in cost.

Yes, of course Mark has a point about reality check.......the majority of the "mass of humanity" have little appreciation for what we as woodturners do........That won't ever change. These are the people who will offer you a beer in a plastic glass that still has the sticker on the bottom.......! :p

Speaking of large bowls does anyone know if Clarendon Hardwood is still making those beautiful bowls anymore. I have a 18" Cherry bowl and it's probably the only thing my wife and I would fight over if we went our separate ways. Trust me, that not happening.
 
It is the law of the free market. No appreciation whatsoever for quality. Only price.
Near me there is a store that sells craft type of things. Went to check it, thinking I could try to sell my bowls. There they were: two 22 inch bowls for $220 each. The price looked suspicious so I lifted the "artifacts": feather light and with a suspicious grain. It was cast plastic. The seller told me that the real things were too expensive and "did not move" thus he has to resort to this type of bowls, made by an american company. Made in USA and they move.

You would think that they could have copied a better bowl than that bedpan with a hole in it. :rolleyes:

But, of course, I forgot that it was a part of the "Phillips" collection. You know what that means -- there's more of them out there. :eek:

The general shape/proportions on that bowl are not very appealing at all. :p

.....at least, not to me, anyway! Obviously, somebody thinks it's a great looking piece, though. :rolleyes:

You didn't really say what their full of...but it's something that Bess Truman tried to get Harry Truman to call fertilizer for many years.

Besides that there's a world of difference between round & turned.
 
You all missed the bottom line.....With the purchase of the resin bowl..you get......10 issues of Martha Stewart Living magazine.
Save a tree....use resin from the barrel of oil.
