Soeren Berger collet chuck

Anyone have info or video of a Soren Berger collet chuck? He mentions it in his sphere turning video but doesn’t show it, and hasn’t answered any questions on it. Thanks

Haven't seen one in ages. I did a work shop with Allen and Stuart Batty. Allen used a jamb chuck for turning spheres. He told the story of making ivory billiard balls. Very entertaining. I think he would tap the sphere gently into the chuck, then tap it again to remove and rotate the sphere. I suppose it could be done with PVC and hose clamps too...

In his video all the viewer see’s is the chuck and the sphere in front of it, then he tightens the jaws. Can’t tell if he has pvc, wood jaws or whatever. He does mentions a little earlier in the video about a vacuum chuck, maybe that’s what he meant. Although why would the viewer be shown a chuck? Thanks for your input

Are these what you're talking about? He sold these when he was selling the caliper . I wouldn't think of them as collets.

Fred holder wrote an article in the June 2011 American Woodworker on Chinese balls.
It includes a ball holding chuck made from threaded pvc coupling
Nice device.

Fred passed away several years ago.

Hockenbery, I’ve already made a pvc Chuck from Fred’s plans. The collet Chuck for actually turning the sphere is what I’m trying to find info on. Thanks

You put the in your scroll chuck and tighten.

I did see Soren demo once or twice. He did have a collet type chuck for his scoops. They had a small dove tail ring on the top that bit into the wood leaving a mark. I didn't like that idea. For me, I would probably over tighten it and leave a mark that would be difficult to remove.

So that must be what Bob B is showing in his reply from above. Why would you Chuck a project up like that if it’s going to leave a mark on the finished item? Thanks again

The DVD that I have refers to the " rings " at the very last. I recieved it from Packard in '08 with the caliper. He says they can be used to check for high spots, to hold for hollowing, decorating and sanding.
