I’ve been turning for about four years. Started on craftsman 48” sold for a jet 1015 (in Texas). Recently bought jet 1221(in Minnesota) I’m a snowbird and really enjoy turning in both states. I have carbide tools tried hss tools in a class I took for bowl turning. Liked both but don’t have the slow speed grinder, cbn, holders etc.

Steve, welcome to the forum. You can do a lot with the Jet 1221. I started out with the Jet 1015 and made a ton of pens and small kit items. With the 1221 bowls around 10” can be made. Many start out using carbide tools and eventually start using traditional turning tools. However some do not. This is one of the best fourms for answering questions for new and experience turners. If you have a local woodturning club in either of your areas I would suggest you attend. If you are not a member of the AAW I would also suggest you join. There is a lot of information and resources on the main AAW site. You ming also want to delay your trip south next year as the AAW symposium will be held in MN. It is a great experience.

Admin I think this thread should be in “Introductions"

Welcome. This site has been a tremendous resource for me over the years. There's a lot you can do with carbide tools these days and lots of online videos of great turners using them.
