Mine is the John Jordan model ( short bed S 750 ) and has a wired remote for only ON/OFF. I would like to add speed control and fwd/reverse. Does anyone know how to do this - or where I might find that info? Going to also post not the Stubby owners group on FB and online - but wanted to ask here first.
Thanks

I'm about to do that too! I bought the stuff, but I'm not cutting any wires until after this big fall open studios - can't afford the down time if things go sideways. I got a switch box on amazon (a friend who is an electrical engineer said the switches were fine), a potentiometer, and some cable (the cable is heavier than I would like - I may trade it out for something thinner/more flexible, but it needs to run enough lines. Probably I don't need that big a gauge because of low voltage circuits). Then it's going to be a matter of cutting wires to the original switches, and reconnecting to the new cable/box. As someone with absolutely zero knowledge or confidence around electricity, I am super glad to be doing this with someone who knows the difference between an electron and a hole in the ground. Here are the links:

From Amazon:

TWTADE/Red Green Momentary Switch, Red Mushroom Emergency Stop Latching Push Button Switch,3 Positions 2NO Latching Select Selector Switch Station Box (Quality Assurance for 3 Years) hz-11ZS-20X-GR
TWTADE / 2pcs rv24yn20s b103 10k ohm Single Turn Rotary Carbon Linear Variable Potentiometer,Used for Inverter Speed Regulation. Motor Speed Control + 2pcs A03 knob + 2pcs dials

From Show Me Cables:
16 AWG - Multi-Conductor - 600V - Stranded Conductor - Unshielded - VNTC Tray Cable

SKU: 82-600-407

Number of Conductors10

Good luck. Please share your approach/experiences!

I think You are limited to 1 speed controller. Unless you do something extraordinary.

A swivel pendant like ONEWAY uses lets you move the speed controller to where want it and then the on off magnetic mount remote can be positioned on the other side of the work from the pendant so you have off without reaching across the work.
Or you can Mount the magnetic where you can turn it off with your hip and keep hold of hollowing tools etc.

I have seen remote pendants for the Stubby with all of the controls on them....So I don't know whether those units are using a different VFD - or if it is an update from the factory....or a modification that can be made by the user. I also looked at the control "panel" on the lathe and thought....why can't I simply extend those wires to and umbilical/remote - in lieu of the simple on/off....?

I have a remote pendant on my Stubby which is connected to the VFD. You will need to wire the pendant to the VFD and figure out the settings for it. This will likely be dependent on the brand of VFD you have.

My approach will essentially be to take the controls from the headstock and move them to a pendant (a box on a cable). No new controls. Functionally attaching the same controls to a longer wire. If it works...

Brian - I figured out by the age ( serial #) of mine and comments from a number of Stubby owners on the owners group that the Stubby used a Eurotherm 601 VFD. And - one of the members there loaded the file for the up-dated pendant, with wiring schematic on the pendant end. There is also a file for the wiring schematic on the Eurotherm VFD....so - I should be able put together a parts list, order the parts needed from McMaster-Carr or Grainger, etc... and assemble the pendant - and wire it to the VFD.
Well...it sounds the easy. We shall see.

This unit has a pendant- but only on/off controls. What I need to have is on/ff, fwd/rev, and soeed control. It is common to other brands with VFDs and according to the user group- this was an option from Bill Rubenstein some years ago. So, that is what I am trying to accomplish.

I've done that on my Jet and Powermatic. Just move the controls and add wire. Easy, simple, effective. Because the Jet and PM controls are just on a flat panel on the headstock, I put them in an outdoor-rated electrical box (they get less dust in there) and added a magnet on the back.
