Texturing wood with acid

One of my students, who is a chemistry professor, tried some etching/texturing of wood with sulfuric acid. The results were less than stellar, and he considered the effect not worth pursuing. I seem to remember seeing some fabulous results attained using acid,which ate away significant wood, resulting in pieces that looked almost like coral or they were highly sandblasted.
I believe they were dyed some wild colors /purple- deep red or blue and displayed in the AAW symposium instant gallery a few years ago. I remember they were very nice hollow forms - almost southwest in nature.
Can anyone give me some information on this technique - The How to's or point me in the right direction of the turner who did them?

Dennis Sullivan uses a lot of acid and coloring on his turnings. He's a member of the Chicago Woodturners.

If you come up with the method - I am sure there are others (me + ?) who would like to know how to do this. It would be real nice to have a picture of the results also if possible. Thanks.
