Hi, I recently bought a used lathe and it came with a LARGE lot of turning tools, some of which I can't find any info on, and can't figure out what they're for. First couple pics are of these adjustable things, Crown tool, maybe some kind of groover? I'm also including a pic of all the stuff that came with it. I'll probably need some help identifying some other stuff as I slowly make my way through it. There are two or three different hollowing systems, a bunch of faceplates a few chucks and a bunch of other stuff that don't fit the lathe that it came with.

First picture shows specialized tools for making a sphere inside a sphere. So, think of a soccer ball. The black spots would be the holes. These tools cut inside the spots and eventually you can have a ball inside a ball. Oh, 12 spots on a soccer ball. I think Fred Holder, former writer of a woodturning magazine had some of those tools available. Take them to a meeting or have a mentor come over and they can identify all of the tools. The 3rd picture is some one's shear scraper. Can't remember who. Looks like you have a bunch of standard bowl turning tools, and maybe a Woodcut hollowing tool. Not really sure what all the other stuff is.

I agree with the ID's above. The tool in the second picture is probably part of the ball in a ball set, but you could email a picture to Crown to confirm.

Thanks! Do you ever come up to Portland? Do you want to be my mentor? haha

Isaac, you're years ahead of the curve in collecting crap you never use. You're instantly in need of a bigger shop!
Haha unfortunately (or maybe fortunately I suppose) I have ended up picking up a few large lots of various woodworking tools over the last couple years and I'm perpetually out of space. Next weekend I'm giving myself the gift of having a shop sale so I can actually get some work done.

Nice haul, BTW. Whoever owned these tools was either an avid turner or an avid tool collector, maybe a bit of botNice haul, BTW. Whoever owned these tools was either an avid turner or an avid tool collector, maybe a bit of both!
You should join Cascade Woodturners, cascadewoodturners.org, and come out to open shop at Dale Larson’s this Saturday.
Joined! Unfortunately I can't go to the open shop this Saturday though. But looking forward to other events!

If you have any tools that you might not use, you can always barter for some other tools you know you definitely want. You can never go wrong on a package deal when buying a used lathe with all of the accessories. The accessories usually end up being worth more than the machine itself.

Isaac...apparently you do not know who Dale Larson is. Just friendly advice.....GO to Dale's.

Dale is a terrific turner. Visiting his shop is a treat.
You get the benefit of other excellent turners in the club.
Dale is a good friend of mine

The third tool (with the knob) looks like a John Jordan scraper. If it is one of Jordan's tools, the blade is double-ended.
Yep, that's one of my shear scrapers. You can see it in use and several ways to put a burr on it at my website.

Isaac, I haven't demoed up in Portland for a few years. Hope to demo at the AAW Symposium there in 2024, I think I heard it will be there. I will attend the Oregon Woodturning Symposium this March, though I am not demonstrating. If you are headed down to Eugene, let me know. I do watch the Duck football games, though glad I missed the Ducks/Bulldogs one....
