Treasure Boxes

I have been doing some work with turquois (picked up near Nipton CA -a short drive from where I live and Abalone shells from the south Pacific a long drive from where I live! Boxes are made from Walnut recycled from a dilapidated bed frame.

I like reusing wood from old, non-salvageable furniture, too. It's a fine line as to when it's proper to do it. Nice pieces!

Darren, you asked about what product Alan used for setting the inlay in place. I also do a lot of turquoise inlay work. Not sure what Alan uses, but I use 2-part epoxy. The person I learned from several years ago taught how to use CA glue, but both of us have gone to epoxy. It does take longer to cure, but there’s been a lot of talk about CA glue not being good as a long-term adhesive and filler — inlays falling out, cracks re-opening, etc.

Thanks, I have been considering going to epoxy. Heard a lot about CA deteriorating over time. I'm also experimenting with recycling plastic instead of throwing it out. Finally getting a process down where I can melt polypropylene or hdpe down and fill cracks with it. I will try to post some things with recycled plastic fill in the near future.
