I found this for free on Craigslist, and I'm probably going to pick it up today or tomorrow. Any guesses as to what kind of tree it is?

I would check the depth of the open hole. I've had times that when you cut pith area the inside of burl is hollow. Hope I'm incorrect. Also would depend on your use . I agree that its Elm. But...

Hope that is not poison ivy or poison oak vines on it..... You can catch it all year long, and for a number of years or months after it is 'dead'. Considering the price, it is worth picking up. If nothing else, you can burn it....

Good catch! That hairy vine sure looks like poison ivy. I wonder if it would be safe to take the fines and the bark off while wearing gloves, before taking it into the shop.

Yeah poisen ivy....need to give that burl away

I’ve heard horror stories about standing in the smoke of burning poison ivy. IF they are true… and IF it’s poison ivy…

Well, the point is moot now. I called him back and he'd already given it away to someone else, even though he said he'd hang on to it for me for a day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Craigslist!

The stories about getting poison ivy and oak from smoke are true. Have heard of it a number of times. Another side note, there are some who are immune to poison ivy and oak. That is like rosewoods. Each contact results in your resistance going down a bit. It is when, not if you will eventually react.

Smoke from poise ivy the aliment is on the inside....tough to treat

My mom had a cousin who breathed in poison ivy smoke when she was a teen. This was probably in the 30s.
From what I understand, she almost died. But she later in life took up smoking, heavily.
You'd think that not being able to breath would have been a learning experience.
