I have selected Red Mallee Folded Form by @Matt Carvalho for this week’s Turning of the Week. In his description, Matt says that he was inspired by Jason Breech’s work for this turning. To me, it looks closer to the work of Stephen Hogbin (check out his Egg Cup, if you aren’t familiar), who undoubtedly inspired Jason’s fantastic boxes. Either way, it is a fantastic variation of an intriguing style of work. I am baffled at how Matt has managed to achieve asymmetry in the “tube” element, while maintaining a perfectly round bowl. Perhaps there is a bit of illusion at play. The pop of blue in a shade that looks like patinated copper plays very well with the natural color of the Mallee. Well done!
