I recently created a wall hanging titled, “ViewPoints”. It’s a very difficult piece to photograph so I made a short video. I wish I had shot video as I created the piece, but I didn’t (hindsight is 20/20). I did have a few “leftover” components on hand, so I put together something and posted it on YouTube at:

I apologize, but I have deleted this video from YouTube. An explanation is contained in the following posts.

Keep TURNING out the beauty.

That is a fantastic piece of work, the video was also very well done. I could rave on for minutes about the art, precision, presentaion, detail, beauty, impact on the viewer, etc. and even more etc. But I'm going back to watch it again. Thanks for the work and the inspiration to do such work.

Until a better word comes along, I will just have to add to other comments-----AWESOME!!!! A question if you please--- Is that a smiley face in the overall view of the hanging? I will go view the video again while you ponder the answer. Max in Texas.

A most creative piece of work and a wonderfully entertaining video.

I did have one question; why didn't you connect the ends of each row with the row above? Were you avoiding an open ribbon effect or do you just prefer the closed loops? I like the piece either way; just curious.

Max,
You had better go back and take 3 looks!!
Kurt:)

Hey, I thought I saw a smiley face in there, too.....but, wasn't sure about that. At one point, I thought I saw a dollar sign, too.......whatever it was, it's an amazing piece of work.

You should see a blood red dollar sign on the right then a smiley face in the middle and then a peace symbol on the left. Whatever you think of the political statement, you have to admire the technical execution.

After watching the video I have mixed emotions about having done so. My first glance at the piece led me to start pondering the complex mathematical calculations and 3D modelling that must have been involved in drawing up the design. Then I see the paper mockup hanging on the wall in the video and realize how incredibly simple the design effort really was (compared to what I initially imagined). It is extremely generous of Malcolm to share all the secrets, but it's a little like finding out the secret to a magic trick. It takes away the wonder and awe and diminishes it. Some things are better left a mystery in my opinion. And when you think about it, there are probably only a handful of people on the planet with the skill, patience and interest to attempt to emulate this kind of work. They most likely don't need the secret revealed.

With respect to the video itself, I think a fade type transition between the related fabrication / assembly segments would be more pleasing to watch and do a better job of conveying the passage of (much) time than the abrupt cuts used. An abrupt cut with a change of topic provides a satisfying sense of completion. Just my opinion as a non-pro who used to fool around with digital video before woodturning took over my life.

Ed, I thank you for your thoughts. Your view regarding the spoiling of the effect by revealing my design technique is an angle that I had not considered - I just thought people would find it interesting and perhaps someone would take the technique into another direction and create something for the rest of us to enjoy.

Regarding any political statements, I leave that to the viewer. I will offer a couple of other insights: in addition to the dollar sign being comprised of bloodwood, the happy face is made of blue mahoe (from Jamaica – be happy), and the peace sign is made from mesquite (one of the most stable woods).

Regarding the video, it was a very quickly put together effort; it was primarily done in response to a few e-mail questions about the piece. In my haste and with my ignorance (no excuse) of copyright rules, I realized that I should never have used Duane Eddy's music in the soundtrack. I have therefore deleted the video from YouTube. When I have the time, I'll probably re-post another version with "public domain" music.

Malcolm, do repost it, I'm sure many would like to see it again, and I know about the music thing in the YouTube videos, I got my first workshop tour video yanked from youtube as I had the radio playing and there was some song on there that someone recognized and they yanked my video

Never thought of it, I always have the radio on in the background.

Again, thanks for the video, I, for one, enjoyed seeing how it came to be, gives me even more respect and awe for guys like yourself that make these wonderful pieces :D

Cheers!

Hey, tahoeturner.......

Out of curiosity, I did a search for "rebel rouser" on youtube........and there are many videos that use that tune by Duane Eddy.

I'm not sure what that means, but I'm sure you are ok to use the tune in your video......and, I thought it was a great choice for it.

Anyway.......just thought you might want to know about that.

Odie, thanks for your "ViewPoint". This was only my second video, so I'm far from an expert in this area. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but suddenly my video was "no longer available". After trying to figure out "why", I concluded that it must have been the unauthorized use of the music; no one notified me of a problem, the video was simply "no longer available" (but it was still listed), so I deleted the listing. With hindsight, I’m pretty sure that I was “in the wrong†to have used the copyrighted material. I don’t know what the situation is with other videos, but I don’t intend to make that mistake again. I do agree that it was a great choice for my soundtrack, but when it comes right down to it, I only own the right to listen to it, not to use Eddy’s music for other purposes.

OK......got it.......and I can certainly understand your thoughts on it.

BTW: Do a search for Duane Eddy on youtube, and you'll be pleasantly surprised on the number of hits you'll get.......even quite a few live performances! I'm really impressed to see his fingers move on the guitar.......now, there's some talent to behold!!!!!!!!!

Malcolm, I too had videos removed from YouTube, same reason, music, but mine was just a radio playing in the background

Anyway, if you go to your YouTube account....

My Account/Videos, Favorites, & Playlists/Video ID Matches

you will see if any of your videos are on the no-no list.

And there is a bunch of info on "how" they figure out what is a copyright violation >> HERE <<

Cheers! :)
