Walnut

A buddy of mine got some big walnut. We processed a couple tonight and got four pieces each around 11” square by 18” long, no pith. Going to start some hollow forms and vases.

With logs that size, I would be thinking about big platters, wall art, and coring bowls.

Agree. Looks like you lucked out. Most folks with walnut logs that size want to slab 'em out and sell 2 inch slabs for $3K - $5K for tabletops and the like - easy way to get 20 grand or more out of a big walnut tree.

I’m exhausted just thinking about processing that much. Luckily I’m not a production turner. Yesterday an arborist was taking down a large ash in my neighborhood. I got about five pieces, which made about 12 bowl blanks. My eyes are always bigger than my shop, as I need to consider what do I have room or time for.

That's a cool photo Lou. Looks like a stressful job for the arborist. Whew! I'm envious of the likely beautiful ash blanks you got from that tree.

Michel, you’re right. The arborist described the job to me as “a ball-buster.” It was hard for me to walk away from some huge blanks, but I realized it was just not a good time for me to be overwhelmed with new wood. Biggest I got was about 14” in diameter.

The big section, I would guess the first one off the stump, has that 'olive ash' heart wood color. TAKE ALL OF THAT YOU CAN GET! That particular color files off of the shelves if you are selling! If not, all of your relatives and friends will drool!

Alas, the issue was a combination of fatigue (suffering from a bit of flu) and no truck. One of these days…
