i was turning the outside of a ftat top hf today, when i had miniscule catch which turned electronics off for 5 minutes

turning on jet 1642 evs on the high belt setting at about 1800 rpms using John Jordan's angled scraper, it just made a line around the top maybe 1/128 tall but turned lathe off, would not start, rpm said 0, i looked and looked, checked belt, about 5 minutes later when i turned on after maybe 20 time it was fine

what happened?

mostly when finishing it is continious curve, book says 4 to 6" 1500 rpms
opps, do ya just use the highest rpms for finishing pens or finials???

It will do just that if you have a remote release. The remote's switch gets dirty and gives the same symptoms. Sometimes it will come back on immediately and sometimes you fiddle with the switch several times before it comes back on.
If that's not it turn off the lathe and unplug it from the wall. The VFD still has voltage on it when plugged in even if the lathe is off.
Hope one of these solves your problem.

Was there perchance a momentary power interuption that coincided with your "catch"? That will sometimes turn the evs off, even when the lathe is turned off. As John said, turn off, unplug, wait a few minutes for all the transient voltages to disipate, plug back in and give it a minute to "reboot". Am not authority on subject, but this works for me.

yes that is what it took to restart it, we do have power surges that i notice on the computer when the screen blinks, but no way to tell on lathe, it did not kick the breaker off, just stopped and read 0

Don't know how old your Jet is, but the PM3520A will go into a safe mode if the lathe senses a certain amount of vibration. I noticed this when I was turning a 16" bowl that wasn't perfectly balanced...Had it spinning maybe 700rpm and when I turned the speed dial down to zero the EVS converter tripped. The 3520A models have a reset button on the converter; press the reset, and all is well.

If your lathe is similar it's possible the catch produced enough of a jolt that the converter kicked into protection mode.

I agree with John Lucas. I had the same thing happen to me while trying to core a bowl on my 1642 - a catch and the lathe stopped and wouldn't start again. I tried several things, and when I finally disconnected the remote switch, everything was fine. I don't know if it blew out the remote switch or not (it's a Powermatic switch), but I opened up the switch and moved the wires to the 2nd set of contacts. When I wired the remote switch back in, the lathe worked fine again.
