Confused

Hi. I've had a Vega 1446 lathe for several years but-as with most of my tools-am only now getting ready to use it. It came with a face plate and I have several other chucks for general turning, but would like to try and turn bowls. Any recommendations out there as to which chuck /and system to buy? So far, I have seen that the Supernova, Axminster, Vicmarc and Oneway systems are readily available and there doesn't appear to be a vast difference in price among them, so any and all advice is welcome. Thanks, HB

Not only are the prices close so is the quality. If you are going to turn a lot of things over 12" go for a big chuck. I have the Oneway Talon and haven't had any problems with it, once I learned how to prepare my tendons and recesses properly. Try to envision what you are going to be turning and check out which jaws are available for your chuck. Stuart Batty Jaws are good for long narrow bowls and unfortunately they are not available for my chuck. You will get lots of advice I'm sure, but if you stick with one of the brands you mentioned you have a good chuck.

SuperNova 2, OneWay, Vicmark are all good

Hi,

I originally chose the SuperNova over the Oneway to save $30, and I've had it for about a year and recently got a SuperNova 2 because of backward compatability of jaws. I'm satisfied with them, and I like the improvements with the SuperNova 2. I haven't used the Oneway or Vicmark chucks, but I believe [unproven by any scientific method] that the Oneway may be worth the extra $30, and I've never met a Vicmark owner who didn't like it. Were I to do it over again I would probably get the Oneway Stronghold based on annecdotal reports. However, you are probably going to be happy with any of those choices.
