Why be so limited

I applaud the effort to have on line contests, as it creates interest and involvement. The layered bowl contest however seams very limited. I also found cumbersome the idea that I had to chase down a magazine to figure out what it is and how to enter. I'd like to see the next challenge be a bit less restrictive and more open to interpretation and creativity. Here are some suggestions.

Nature's Canvas - The beauty of the natural composition revealed. Celebrate the lines, textures, colors, and designs revealed through turning.

Enhanced Beauty - Entries feature wood with one or more of the following enhancements. Dying, painting, carving, drawing, burning, etc.

Sets - Entries feature two or more pieces that make a set. Salt & pepper shakers, cup and saucer, pen and pencil, bookends, lamp and shade, etc.

I was excited to have the opportunity to enter this contest. But, like you, I was a bit dismayed at having to "chase down" a magazine article. I did manage it, and was surprised at the small size of these bowls.

I was further dismayed when I re-checked the original post so I would remember the deadline, only to find that my "blank" was way oversized for the project. Luckily I had some scraps left, and I started over.

It's turned out well though. I'll post a picture when I get a decent finish on it. I finally got a thick enough coat on it tonight to cover the endgrain dullness...

I actually like the restrictions of this contest. The limitations kept it within a "doable" parameters. Not that I don't think you have some good ideas though....

The only thing that I'd change would be to post the article... I didn't have the magazine and won't get my first one til spring...

Outside of the mail problem that is being corrected - membership in AAW includes the magazine with the article you are complaining about having to chase down.

I mean no disrespect but..............

this contest appears on the AAW forum, paid for by AAW dues, staffed by AAW volunteers. I have never heard one complaint by AAW members, that non-members use the forum. In fact I think non-members have been very welcome and encouraged to participate. I think it is a bit rude to complain about having to find a magazine or follow a few rules when you are engaged in an AAW sponsored event.

All contests have rules and we chose to base the contest from the quarterly magazine. The layered bowl concept has been around for awhile. Certainly the author of the article has found it a sufficiently interesting concept to have explored it for years.

We might post the article next time. I am hopeful the mail issue got resolved. Plus we were dealing with the holiday postal mail. But it really doesn't take a long time to make one of these items unless someone gets creative. It will be interesting to see the submissions.

I think you have some interesting suggestions Jim and we'll consider them in light of the articles which will be in the Spring edition. Just curious...why you did not enter the last contest. The concept of the last contest was possibly more open ended....as seen by the resulting entries.

Simple Elegance

I think the object of this contest is to take a simple concept and make an elegant work of art. I am hoping to see something that is simple in design, but looks like it belongs in a galary.

Thanks for noticing us. But since Jeff and I are actually paid, we get a turned and engraved platter every year at the banquet, and I would estimate that cost at $20 each. Times two, it will require us to sell about 6 magazines (a year) to overcome the incredible overhead of the moderators. Don't get Jeff started on the cost of the board and the hundreds of hours he puts into the software, backend, infrastructure!. (I just type, he actually has to work on his end).

(And the platters, they aren't expected, but very appreciated, and if you see us at a symposium or event, have a beer with us)
