I am makeing a chess board and peaces for my father in law, who lives in Australia. I thought about walnut and maple but maple tends to move a lot and don't think that glue joints would hold between the walnut and maple. dose anyone have any ideas. I am makeing the board and peaces out of the same woods with a purpleheart trim.

Laminate thin squares of the material or even veneer to a stable substrate (MDF or plywood) and you will not have any movement problems. There is no reason you need to use full-thickness boards for your squares. Walnut and maple contrast wonderfully, too.
