Just got some nice pieces of this tree from my neighbor, had to cut it down because it was growing over the septic. Looks nice but I don't recognize it. Anyone know what it is?

Interesting. In any case, I did some roughing tonight which I'll clean up in the morning, it turns quite nicely. Much more yellow on the inside. I don't think the pictures show it very well.

Well, I might say ash, but those growth rings look really big/wide. Most ash does not have that big of growth rings.

turned bowl looks like it might be mulberry. Put a piece in the sunlight and see if the yellow turns a darker brownish color.

I looked at some images of mulberry and I think that's what this one is. The ends of the logs are a darker brown and they'd been sitting out in the sun for a few days before I got them.

Very enjoyable to turn, although it's wet enough that a pulp built up on the gouge on larger cuts. Not sure if that's something wrong with my cut, though, or due to the wood/moisture itself.

My first thought was red oak.

Then seeing the bowl, have definitely changed my mind. Pretty sure it’s not ash.

Mulberry seems the most plausible from my limited experience.

I believe that this bowl is the one from the image I posted before. I gave this to the neighbor as a gift.

@Leo Van Der Loo , is that darker bowl in the last image of your post stained? Does mulberry change color that far on its own? Gorgeous bowl. I'm quite a big fan of the color that mulberry ages to.

Thanks Henry, I never stain any turning, so no not stained, just aged.
Here is a bowl that shows the checking of the sapwood I mentioned.

This is a set of individual salad bowls I made for my son's family, they have been used and have salad oil used on them, and yes they do get dark.
