AAW 2011 October Contest

Total Length = 8"

Diameter of Globe = 2-1/16"

Total Weight = 0.8 oz

Loquat Wood (a bland wood that is even less attractive when spalted, but it carves and turns very nicely. No wood visible anywhere, so my spalted loquat was a good choice for this project).

Coated with atomized copper and then sprayed with acids to develop a patina. Buffed patina off high spots to reveal copper for highlighting.

Hollowed globe to 1/8" wall thickness. Carving reduced minimum wall thickness to 1/16".

Decorative carving on globe and spiral were done on a Jet 1442 lathe that I've converted to a Digital Ornamental Lathe (somewhat like a CNC lathe, but different in many ways).

Hanging loop is stripped copper electrical wire.

Merry Christmas (a little early).

Ed
merry xmas to you Ed, nicely done

Ed - Congratulations on the first place pick. Beatutiful ornament indeed. The ornamental carving and twisting of the finial are fantastic. You deserved the choice of first place for sure.
