African Basket Form in Mesquite

African Basket Form in Mesquite

I have been focused on cultural basket forms lately - primarily Native American. It turns out that there is quite a history of African basket art derived, as is usually the case, from functional use. Certainly there are similarities in the styles that have evolved from the two cultures, and also distinctions. The embellishment here is also somewhat representative of authentic examples. I'm thinking this might also make an interesting/pleasing urn form. This piece is 10" tall and 8" wide. The wood is Texas Mesquite.
A different look from above.

Another beauty--great work David. You inspired me to down the African basket rabbit hole, and I found a lot of cool designs and shapes that you don't see very often outside of that context. Thanks for the push.

That is what I typically do - google my way down rabbit holes to find these culturally evolved styles and shapes. I did notice that many of the African basket forms are BIG - almost laundry basket size. That would be a challenge.

You’re right about that—some of those baskets are massive. Colorful too. Such a grand combination of functional form and aesthetics.
