Chapin's Flowers

Carved and dyed pine. 7" D x 7" H. Southwestern olla.
very, very nice, dinyar! would love to see this one in person. what are you using to carve and color?

Thanks -e-. For carving I use an old Makita reciprocating carver, or a Weecher attached to my Dremel for the bigger cuts. For the smaller ones, I use various burrs on a Foredom-type (read, cheaper version of the Foredom tool from Harbor Freight!) tool.

For dyeing, I use multiple applications (with sanding) of aniline cloth dyes dissolved in water.

One of the weird things about this piece is that I took a lot of pictures of it, as I find I can study pieces better in photographs (they isolate sections of the piece, and force you to look at each section more carefully). When I did that, I kept finding flat spots, and I would look at the actual turning, and there weren't any. I saw that the flat spots changed positions in the pictures, and realized that they were being caused by the carvings.
