Bastao Platter

This 8 1/2 inch diameter platter was turned from Bastao wood. The word 'bastao' means walking stick in Portuguese. You can see why when you look at the original log. It looks like a loose gathering of walking sticks somehow joined together in the middle. The variety of grain patterns, textures and colors (why is the bark contour turned inward?) made this a rewarding project. Finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system. Take a look at the first comment to see an image of the log with a section cut out to make this platter

Here's a link to an image of the Bastao wood log I used to make the platter. You can see where I cut out a vertical slice of wood. It really looks like a 'gathering' of walking sticks.
