Dye Experiment

Dye Experiment

Spalted Water Oak vase with my first attempt at a dye job - RIT fabric dye --> purple to scarlet to golden yellow (yuck).
Practice makes better - for my next practice I'll try just one color.
7" high x 6" wide.
Bob-

I mix my dyes with alcohol- I think that it pentreats deeper and dosen't raise the grain like water. I pour 4 oz of alcohol into a jar and add the dye to the color that I want. If dry powder usually a tablespoon or if liquid pour into the jar until the color I'm looking for. If you are using the powder let it sit for the solids will sink to the bottom. Suck off the liquid and pour out the solids.

I spray starting out with the solid color then cut in at what ever point the blending in the next color. If the color is not working out, have clean jar of alcohol or water ready and wipe the area that is not working out to clean and delute out the color then reshoot. Also after the color is applied you can still wipe with a wet rag or brush to further blend the colors.

Hope this helps

Bob-

Forgot to mention earlier, you can use bleach to wipe out the color on your piece if you used water in your dye. After using wipe it down with a wet rag and set aside to dry then resand with 400 the proceed to dye again.

Gary,

Many thanks for sharing your techniques.
I'm anxious to try - but - need something to apply the dye to. ;-)

Practice makes better.
