Jim's Surprize

Jim's Surprize

A while back my buddy Jim Adkins and I decided to do a turning swap. He got right too it and sent me a wonderful piece done in his SW Basketweave form. After receiving one of his masterpieces I knew I needed to raise the bar a bit. So... I finally got to work on my end of the deal about 3 1/2 months ago. This piece of sycamore was turned and hollowed (by hand) while green to final shape, allowed to dry, about 25 hours worth of piercing and a little pyro on the top and bottom and I finally fulfilled my end of the bargain! Least to say, I am not ready to start a project like this for a while.

Jim called me tonight and let me know that it arrived safe and sound and that he liked it. So now I can post the info and photos without ruining the surprize for him! Ho Ho Ho, here ya go!

7" high x 6 1/2" wide and a real close 3/16" thick thoughout. 4 coats of Tung Oil Finish.

Comments and such are always welcome

Very excellent work, Scott......

You say it was "turned and hollowed (by hand) whille green to final shape".......I wonder if you might elaborate on the "by hand" part just a little.....

thanks

Odie, what I meant by that is that I didn't rough turn this one while green, dry it and return it to the lathe for final shaping/hollowing. This one was still green/wet when I was completely finished turning/hollowing. The "by hand" is a reference to mean that no hollowing rig with a laser was used to hollow it. I just used hand held hollowing tools (primarily my Trent Bosch hollowers). I have a Carter Hollow Roller with the laser, but the opening I wanted for this piece was smaller than the stock boring bar of the Carter. Plus the inside walls needed to be as smooth as possible (for my preference) so I prefer the "feedback" of a hand tool when doing the intricate work of getting a consistant 3/16" wall. Thanks

This could be your best work yet, Scott. Very impressive hollowing and the piercing is spot-on!. Very well done piece!

Lovely work Scott
Id call this a time waster (not in the literal sense )The time it must have taken to complete
Seems we are following each other around
