Live Oak tall bowl

Live Oak tall bowl

I turned this tall bowl from a fresh cut live oak log. The vessel was oriented in the log so as to display the prominent rays in a symmetrical pattern aligned with undulating distortion at the rim. Vessel was turned in one session, then air dried for a few weeks. Color is from Fiebing black dye, and finish is 3 coats of Danish oil. This is one of my many attempts to achieve good quality without sanding. (OK, I did sand the base flat after air drying). Height 5", Width 6".
If that piece is unsanded oak, you succeeded in producing a very smooth surface off your tools, and also succeeded in producing a dramatic effect with the orientation. Nice job.

Hi Dean, The exterior surface is initially from shear scraping with a swept back bowl gouge. I cut the coves with a 1/4" bowl gouge, sharpening after every few cuts. Thanks for your comments. Larry
