Thanks everyone for commenting Tom its made from Maple and the finish is spray paint, it is the only thing I have found that gives the really flat finish I want with this kind of piece.
Hal You are right I am not a fluent Miwok speaker! However I do love finding out the stories and creation myths of other cultures they provide great inspiration for making pieces as the language used is always so poetic!
