Mesquite Bowl
David Bartell

Mesquite Bowl

A bowl turned from Texas Mesquite. 5 inches tall and 10 inches wide. The bead-like feature under the rim is repeated above the base. I am calling this style of embellishment: beading illusion. It is certainly a derivative of basket illusion but stops short of covering the piece and is meant to draw attention to the natural wood and vessel shape. With basket illusion it is best to sometimes have some planned irregularity which helps in the illusion. For this style it seems best to have the "beads" crisp and regular to fit the intention. It's a fun challenge.
