My First Burl

My First Burl

I think I've been turning for close to 3 years now, and this is the first burl I've done. 9x3 Maple Burl, finished with shellac.
Nice, what is the black rim band, paint?
It's a scorching, and a happy accident. After the shellac had hardened on the cloth I was using, I pressed it a little too firmly against the outer corner, and noticed it burnt a bit. So I triple and quadruple folded my tshirt material over and over, made sure some of that hardened shellac was on the outside of the cloth, and pressed firmly enough to get a consistent burn mark along the edge, without burning right through the material to my fingers.
