Pythagorean Cup (with siphon detail)

Pythagorean Cup (with siphon detail)

Pythagoras designed a special cup to teach his students about greed. The cup would hold wine…unless it was filled too high, in which case the wine would be siphoned out the bottom, draining the cup completely. His lesson: moderation begets equality, which begets justice.

This cup's siphon was created by removing a thin slice from the center of the blank, CNC routing a channel, gluing the blank back together, and then turning the cup, careful to not cut into the inner channel. The CNC was also used to engrave the words "Moderation Equality Justice." Walnut and maple, 7"h x 6.5"w.
I did that back in 2016 but I started with a solid piece of birch and turned the cup with center column about 1/2" diameter and bored a 1/4" hole all the way thru to the base then made a test tube shape with about a 3/4" inside. The column had 3 sticks attached vertically to space the tube to maintain the opening. The open end of the tube was in the bottom of the cup and had some notches in the end allow the liquid to enter so that the siphon would start when liquid level reaches the top of center column.
I took it to one of our club meetings and proved that it works using an unsuspecting member.

Very nice. I think that if Greed teamed up with Gluttony, they could swill down the wine before it had a chance to siphon off.

By the way, everybody has at least one of these Pythagorean siphon devices in their home ... also known as flush toilets.

The solution to “my cup runneth over”! It’s been around for all these years, go figure!!
