Shell Fragment Series #3

Shell Fragment Series #3

9.5L x 3H x 2.5D. Maple, turned, carved, pierced. This is the piece of Vicki Jordans maple that she gave me at the Hartford symposium. The inspiration for this piece came from another of my shell fragments gathered at Matanzas Inlet, a bit south of St. Augustine, Fl, on the Atlantic coast. The shell is a left-handed welk, otherwise known as a lightning welk (Busycon sinistrum Hollister, 1958). I had considered bleaching it, as the original was very white from sun bleaching, but the subtle maple figure that evolved told me to leave it be. It is photographed lying on a piece of driftwood plank that I collected about 2 years ago while still living on the beach. As always, C&Cs most welcome.
Thanks Don. When doing this series, I'm trying to stay close to the inspirational piece of shell fragment, so I spend much time studying the placement, size, angle and depth of any piercings.

Smiles,
Rick
