Sitka spruce

Sitka spruce

Sitka spruce is normally a very light weight wood, perfect for guitars and airplanes. This piece was every bit as heavy as a medium density hardwood. Much of it cracked even after taking a year to dry.

Dimensions:9 1/2 wide X 2 1/4 high
Beautiful piece. I just realized you must have a lot of that wood there! As you do live in Sitka , Alaska . Haha. Do you just turn local woods or do get in maple Burl and such up there ?

@Lamar Wright Thanks Lamar.
@Glenn Lefley Thanks Glenn. I pretty much only turn local woods. I made an exception for a piece of purpleheart on a commissioned bowl last week.
Yes, there is a lot of Sitka spruce here, but I've only ever seen two trees with that sort of growth in it.

@Bill Boehme Thanks Bill. It was a lot like burl. And you're right, it wasn't a proper burl. The ocean side fact of the tree was covered in thousands of little suckers. So much pitch. I split the stock with a friend and he soaked much of his stock in rubbing alcohol, and apparently that dealt with the pitch fairly well.
