Thuya Burl Capsule Box

This capsule box is another in the series of boxes I have made lately. Turned from Thuya Burl from Morocco, this species is very oily and dense when turned. It is a very beautiful wood with lots of swirling grain and burl knots. Turned, hollowed and finished with wax and gloss lacquer. Size is approx. 2 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches tall. Haven't posted in awhile as this has been a really busy month so far! Shop time is definitely valuable!
Nice Gabriel. How did you like working with Thula? I’ve heard of it (and how oily it is), but don’t know much about its “turnability”.

Thanks Michael! It really has a strong odor, the tree is related to cedar so just imagine the cedar smell about 3 times more powerful! It is extremely oily, clogs sandpaper up in about 2 seconds so I went through a lot of paper. It turns really nice when slightly green, as this piece was. Overall I probably would not turn it again unless I had a REALLY nice figured piece....

Thanks for the information--good to know! Well, it does look like a beautiful wood, so I won't be disappointed if you turn it again. ;)

A lovely little box! Well done Gabriel. Your description of the oiliness and smell reminded me of some Cypress wood from BC that I recently turned. It stunk up the whole house! I did a quick Google and yes, Thuya is in the Cypress family.
