Tree

A little piece I just finished. Made from Cherry this piece 150mmx150mm is finished with a satin acrylic lacquer. I have made rocking tree pieces before but this time I wanted to make a less chunky one. I like the concept of a bowl on its side thus making its function obsolete (cutting great big holes in the sides also serves this purpose however the finished object always retains an outward appearance of a bowl) These pieces - in my mind - cease to be bowls or hollow forms they are just an object to look at. The function is lost. I was tempted at first to remove the rim and this is something I may do in the future but I liked the idea of the circle representing life from the ground to the top of the tree in a never ending cycle (barring meteor strikes, Nuclear war etc)
Wonderful concept, superb execution, wonderful result. After mentioning, it would be interesting to see it without the ring, but it would become more realistic and perhaps lose some of the mystique.

I like it with the ring.

That being said, I've been planning to do something similar; a wind-blown bristlecone pine with the rest of the bowl cut away. Having seen this, however, I may set the bowl on its side, since that allows me to make the tree much bigger.
