Tri-layer box with threaded lid was decorated on the inside with an ornamental lathe. African Blackwood, Bloodwood, and Boxwood. Size is 2.6" diameter. Inspired by the work of Dale Chase (now deceased).
Ed -- The concentric cylinders are turned on a metal lathe to get the required precision, accurate control of thickness, and a uniform flat side on the cylinder. I mount the blanks on a MT2 arbor with epoxy because I can transfer them from the metal lathe to the ornamental lathe with almost no loss of accuracy. Once I start turning a cylinder, I don't remove it from the metal lathe while the next layer is being glued on. Regular chucks that screw onto the spindle are not accurate enough. The only bad thing about these is that most of the expensive wood ends up on the floor as sawdust.
