Fabulous vessel Ed. Are you a skew man? I really like the way oak cuts with a skew - you can get an extremely smooth cut. The tough part is keeping the oak from cracking prior to turning!

Is this delightful piece turned side or end grain? I have some red oak that I am going to cut up soon, and want to try to do pieces that look this nice, and the grain orientation is often a key factor.

Dan, I do use a skew and seldom have cracking issues if the wood is properly sealed. However, I try to turn fresh Oak ASAP.

George, You noticed the grain orientation. That should tell you that it was a combination of side grain and end grain. The wood was mounted with the grain at about a 45 degree angle to dead center of the endgrain.
